Its funny to think we recorded Fuck You Pay Me and this in the same session. It’s hard to imagine being able to record anything else within a year wide radius of this record, so powerful and honest and insanely brave a performance it is from my dear friend.
The beat I made late one night early one morning a few months back when Charlotte was in India. I’d been up all night making usic and drinking Jack Daniels and Dr Pepper, and I was working on my Zion 2012 Project Bluebeam Staged Alien Invasion Slash Rapture Event: The Musical project, that’s coming out later this month, hopefully with a more succinct title. I sampled an extravegant three pop songs: Gene’s immortal Olympian, Rufus Wanwright’s 11:11 and The Only Ones’ Another Girl Another Planet. I was so pleased with the thing I broke out my emergency weed and sat up for ours playing it very loud on repeat. The benefits of living above a shop and having no direct neighbours.
Anyway, when I knew Envy was coming round to record, it occurred to me that she’d sound amazing on this. I was going to rap on it too, but when I heard what she’d written, it was obvious that nothing else was needed. Of all the records we’ve made, this may be my favourite, even if it is rather hard to listen to. I am not ashamed to admit I dropped a tear mixing it.
EDIT: the song is now officially Martin Rossiter approved. ACE.
@akirathedon I am so flattered, thank you. I think it’s wonderful. Bless you. x
