Yes, we are at NUMBER 2 in the Hype Machine Twitter charts, above Robyn and Andre 3000 and Radiohead and hot on the heels of LCD Soundsystem. HOOOO-GRAAAAAAAAH!

BIG UP EVERYBODY who’s been involved in this historic feat! And it’s not over. Number one is within our grasp. Multiple votes seem to count, perversely enough, so GET IN and LET’s GET THAT NUMBER ONE! For as Chilly Gonzales so wisely noted on Presidential Suite:

“It’s a popularity contest
You’ve just got to put it in context.”

Yes indeed.

Anyway. As I mentioned on twitter earlier, I awoke at the crack of dawn today with a terrible burning pain in my belly, and lo I did run to the bathroom heaving painfully, eventually spattering the bathtub with a foul red acid slop, reminiscent of the Martian Weed from Jeff Wayne’s War Of The Worlds...  the stuff stripped all the enamel off my teeth and has left me feeling pretty shit, to be honest, therefore I am cancelling today’s Doncast, as I don’t want to deliver anything subpar, and, as noted last week, the royal We are charging the format to something BIGGER and MORE AWESOME.

So sorry if you, like, took the day of work or anything crazy like that.

Anyway, last night’s meeting was fruitful, you’ll be glad to know. Momentum around this here Don seems to be picking up beautifully, which spells Good News for that long awaited Life Equation… I shall be letting you know very soon how you can get involved in the artwork. It’s gonna be a flipping masterpiece.

OH YEAH! I forgot to say – my little brother Zef was trying to fix the whole navigating past the first page issue last night, and somehow broke the comments section, and some other stuff. Hopefully that will be fixed soon, but in the meanwhile you can send messages via Twitter and Facebook.

EDIT: It’s fixed! Zef coached his girl Kelly through the process on the telephone. Amazing. Maybe they can do the new website that way. Win!

It’s the May 12th 2010 DONCAAAAAAAAAAST! Special guest DJ Jack Nimble is in the building! Playing brand new music from that Street Fighter mixtape! Awesome records! Enlightening banter! Chatroom interaction! And so much more!

AS with last week, I really don’t have time to write down all the songs we played right now. I need a PA of some sort. Is that what PA’s do? Maybe a secretary. Anyway. I gotta run down the post office now and send people their awesome gear. The CDQ track separated bundle of The Street Fighter Mixtape is uploading as I type ALSO  READY FOR YOU TO DOWNLOAD! I am excited for you all to be able to get that. Oh, I changed the title too. This is The Street Fighter Mixtape, I have no idea what I was thinking with that long-ass title I was rocking yesterday. Foolishness.

Oh, and shout out James Holland and Electric Pig for being the first to cover the mixtape, a mere few hours after it dropped. SKILLS! That sort of thing is hugely appreciated.

Speaking of which, I’ve been getting a lot of emails and things asking how people can send me Birthday Swag. I am in no way averse to birthday swag, and I have an Amazon Wish List thingy here. But, in all seriousness, your friendship, and the motivation you give me to keep doing what I do are incredible gifts that few could dream of. Who could ask for more? Truly, I feel blessed, and am deeply and eternally grateful to you.

OK! I run out now. IN A BIT GANG!

If you listened to this week’s most excellent and righteous DONCAST you’ll be up on this already, but if not, there’s been an interesting discovery round these parts this week. A Michael Fitzgerald wrote me the following email:

I was just curious as to the association between your song off When We Were Young and the song “Him” from Lily Allen’s newest album. I noticed there is an uncanny resemblance between the melody of these two songs and was wondering if they are simply based on the same sample or if you worked with her on the production of that particular song?

By the way, this about my favorite song off that album…always gets a positive reaction even here in Moscow, Idaho. Unfortunately, its a little hard to get a hold of your albums here in Idaho…

Cheers Mike! Well, as you can hear in the clip above, I was entirely unaware of this – as was my special guest Joey2tits… so we had a listen to the songs to see if there really was any resemblance. In case your life has been tragically bereft so far, and you’ve never heard it, here’s my ’05 sunshine masterpiece , Oh What A Glorious Thing:

Amazing. And here’s Lily Allen’s Him, from 2009’s It’s Not Me, It’s You

That was my initial reaction, anyway. Lily’s song is evidently built around a replay of the same guitar loop my song is – the first few bars of Nico’s gorgeous and lugubrious These Days. Now, its not unusual for people to sample similar things, no matter how obscure. What makes this ultra-suspect is the context – UK pop-rap, and the fact that the beat drops in exactly the same fashion, as does the bass. I played with Ms Allen when she was promoting her first album also. Oh yeah! AND! A couple of years ago my manager at the time had some meetings with Greg Kurstin who, having listened to my debut LP, was keen to work with me on my second. Scheduling conflicts stopped this from happening, however, as Kurstin was about to go into the studio with – yep – Lily Allen!

The big difference, of course, is that Oh! What A Glorious Thing has an amazing chorus, and Him has a horrible chorus.

What do you think?
