Read an interview with me about manga Music at Comics Alliance.
Brothers and sisters! Ladies and gentlemen! Dons and Donettes! it is 05:39am on October 25th, 2011, and it is my very distinct and giddy pleasure to present to you:
MANGA MUSIC
Manga Music is my twenty sixth ATD mixtape, a tribute to the monumental works of Manga Entertainment, who this year celebrate 20 years of serving us Westerners with the very finest anime.
20 (twenty) years ago I was a little boy living by the sea in North Wales gaping in awe at their advert for Akira in the back of my Dad’s copy of Vox magazine. A little while later I was pushing a big VHS cassette into its slot, an a few hours after that my life was changed forever.
I was always going to make this mixtape, but it was important to me that I waited until I had acquired the necessary skills to do it justice. I produced every track on the thing, all sixteen, and they had to sound amazing. I started work on this in June, four long months ago. Back then I was a bachelor, and I worked in Acid Pro on a PC. Now I am married, and I work in Logic on a Mac, as shown to me by my sensei Dr Stephen Hague. I have never taken this much time on a mixtape in all my many years of making mixtapes, but like I said, it was important to me that it came out sounding amazing.
As usual, my rap super-friends came through and blessed me with incredible performances (and I made a new rap super-friend, San Francisco alchemist Time), Jeres played some next level guitar, and DJ Jack Nimble provided the scratches. My beautiful wife suffered the loss of her husband for a wile, who spent many nights up till it got light mixing and metadating (check out the next level awesomeness of my fully linked-up Youtube mixtape payer!) and filling the house with diesel fumes. Finally, Zef added the extra touches of magic to my Otomo cover version artwork.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that helped me make this record, everyone that bought it on preorder, or its accompanying T-shirt and hoodie (the hoodie is my favourite item of merch I have yet produced), and of course, everyone involved in creating, and distributing the incredible art that changed my life, inspires me to this day, and formed the foundation of these songs.
Anyway. That’s enough talk. This is your record now. I hope you enjoy it.
