Word around the campfire is following Lupe Fiasco’s final solo LP LupEND, due this Summer, he’ll be fronting a rock band.
The band is called Japanese Cartoon, and Lupe is rumoured to be fronting the band under the alias Percival Fats. Two tracks credited to the band have shown up on Zshare. Unlike everyone else reporting on this, I have listened to them, and can provide some small analysis.
The first track, Army, obviously a very rough demo involving some fuzz bass and a drum machine, has a dude with a Mike Myers styled British accent singing through a muffled mike about the military industrial complex. The singer has a flow that suggests repeated listens to rap music, but I am not convinced its Lupe. The track sounds a little like a Moldy peaches outtake. It’s not particularly good, but it IS obviously a demo, and were I a betting man, I’d wager it was recorded on Garageband.

The other joint, Heirplanes, is much better quality. A sleek, rumbling bass cut through with some fuzzy guitars and a drum machine that sounds more like an actual kit, topped with a relatively well-produced vocal that definitely sounds like Lupe. Lupe putting on a strange British accent. This one sounds a little like Axl Roses’ attempt at cockernee on The Spaghetti Incident. “Here’s your pistol and your poison please dec-oide!” he intones, sweetly. I quite like it, for my sins.

A post on the band’s Myspace page, however, denies Lupe’s vocal involvement.
“Japanese Cartoon’s Myspace page has been hacked,” states a message posted yesterday. “Percival Fats (Born Percival Hindenburg-Fats) Is NOT Lupe Fiasco (Born Wasalu Muhammad Jaco). Although he is a dear friend… Lupe does finance the band but is NOT I REPEAT NOT THE SINGER IN JAPANESE CARTOON. He is however the producer and we value his participation very much.”
What do you guys think? I call promo shenanigans. Obviously.
