HWYL!

Well, I am very tired now, having been doing lots of stuff and having an entirely safe and exceedingly polite S4C camera crew follow me about all day. This involved talking an awful lot of Welsh, which I am not as good at as I’d like to be. BOETH!

Indeed. Was very good. Why Lout? came by to drop verses on a Back In The Day remix. Rehearsed with them and my Women. Tego interviewed me in an amusing manner for Artrocker. I finished that XFM mix.

Chester tomorrow.

Whoo!

Hwyl.

When you're talking about "she" being a chanteuse is that me you're talking about? Or someone else? If it is someone else, apologies for assuming it'd be me, only i know Adam N hsa called me a chanteuse before…right i'll shut it now :)

I’m loving the HHC disc – bought the mag yesterday and had it on repeat since. Not heard your stuff till now – I’m gonna get the album. On the ‘Oh’ track – is that a Dire Straits sample? Genius! (Plus love the way you use that Elastica riff on Boom)
    Take care man

It’s a sample from Nico’s [German chanteuse, one-time collaberator with the Velvet Underground] song, ‘These Days’.

A lovely song that I can’t listen to now without shouting, “Oh! What a Glorious Thing!”, over the top.

how come she’s always a chanteuse when other female singers are called singers?

  • http://adamwalton.co.uk AdamW

The word ‘chanteuse’ was used by jazz clubs in the 40′s and 50′s when they had a female singer on. Nico was a European beatnik who spent some time in jazz clubs. The connection probably dates back to that and by the time she got to the States, ‘chanteuse’ was probably used to emphasise her European-ness.

Dusty Springfield gets called a chanteuse too. maybe it’s a cooler alternative to diva – without the ego connotations.

I love your ten word reviews, svenhunter. You certainly got the essence of the Fratellis to pat.

hey, thanks for the info man – Nico and the Velvets are great. I thought it sounded like the opening to Dire Straits 'Romeo and Juliet'! Loving the other stuff on the CD too – esp. the dark political stuff. The Gitmo track on your site is powerful too.
